Mythology Gag: The final battle with Bowser takes elements of previous battles including New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Bros.Bowser's boss battle theme incorporates the Recurring Riff associated with him in Super Mario 3D World.
The beginning of the castle theme is based on this part of Field Golf from Mario Golf: Advance Tour.Minecart Madness: In World 2 and World 8, certain levels require Mario to ride a minecart across tricky tracks.Just like last time, it will try to kill you in a similar fashion to the Angry Sun. Drop the Hammer: The Hammer Suit also makes an appearance in this game, retaining the abilities of the Blue Shell it is based off of while also allowing Mario or Luigi to run without immediately going into the shell and throw hammers, which, as usual, defeats most enemies the Fire Flower cannot.Divergent Character Evolution: As in Lost Levels, Luigi has a higher jump, slower acceleration, and less traction.The Ghost House theme (and by extension, King Boo's theme) is one of these towards Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island's Fortress theme.
